  • Participate in Beautification Acts:Arcadia Beautiful Awards

  • CIEDM Meetup on Air Quality, Cycling, Climate & Preserva

The meetup is to celebrate and spread the message of a several related environmental events in May calling public awareness and actions on air quality, bicycling, impacts of climate changes, and heritage preservation.

May is kicked off by the Air Quality Awareness Week, April 30 - May 4, a program of EPA's AirNow, followed by the Climate Impacts Day on May 5, an international event sponsored by grassroot group 350.org/connectdots.org. In the US, May is the National Preservation Month, a National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) program, and May 1 is the Heritage Preservation's MayDay 2012, with climate impacts in mind, themed as Preparedness Protects Our Heritage.

In the US, May is also the National Bike Month, May 9 is the 1st National Bike to School Day, May 14-18 is the National Bike to Work Week & May 18 is the Bike to Work Day. To participate in the national air quality and bike events, locally in Los Angeles, the US metropolitan region with the worst air quality on ozone, South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) starts its program of 2012 Mow Down Air Pollution Lawn Mower Exchange on Wednesday May 2, LA Metro celebrates Bike Week LA in the week of May 14. In Arcadia where I currently serve as a Arcadia Beautiful Commissioner, we'll have Arcadia Community Bike Ride on Saturday May 5, the Climate Impacts Day..

The by-invitation only meetup is scheduled in the late afternoon on Friday May 4. In the meetup, as a longterm activist of 350.org, a member of NTHP, a menber of Association of Pedestrian & Bicycle Professionals, a member of International Walk to School in the USA & a member of the AQMD's Chinese-American Business & Community Leaders Working Group, I shared with our guests about the origins & intends of those above-mentioned events and the following:

1.City of Los Angeles' "open street" efforts on Sunday April 15 - LA's 4th CicLAvia. About 100,000 people walked, biked & enjoyed 10 car-free miles of Los Angeles streets.
2.Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa recently announced plans for a privately funded and operated bike sharing program that would place 4,000 bikes at 400 stations in downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Playa del Rey, Westwood and Venice Beach over the next two years. The objective is to start a program of encouraging commuter biking that eventually reduce traffic jam.

On Wednesday May 9, the 1st Bike to School Day, we participate in the Sierra Club's Celebrate National Bike Month with Safer Communities by sending a message to our local representatives in Congress to let them know that we need them to work with federal and state transportation officials for safer communities with more biking options & facilities.

On Saturday May 12, we comment on the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrested three men for the burglaries of around 50 bicycles all over Souther California. The action is very timely in this National Bike Month. Hope the victims can soon get their bikes back and join members of cycling community to celebrate the the National Bike to Work Week during May 14-18, and the National Bike Day on this coming Friday, May 18.

Get on bikes, get new mowers, go for health air for breath & resillent earth for safety!

April is the National Garden Month, in respond to the call for a Community Green Up Day to clean up gardens by the National Gardening Association, the sponsor of the Month, ISERI and CIEDM selects April 6 as the Green Up Day. It is not only for the purpose to serve as a local event to celebrate the National Garden Month, but also to respond to the 28th Annual National Week of the Ocean from April 1 to April 7 as well as the National Walk to Work Day on April 6. On the Green Up Day, we will clean up the street in front of Arcadia EcoHome and the yard around the EcoHome, a Surfrider's Ocean Friendly Garden, so as to reduce the impact of urban runoff to the ocean. The same event will also raise community awareness of April 6 being the National Walk to Work Day and call for walk/bike/bus/carpooling to work instead of drive alone. The reduction of use cars, mean less powders resulted from car tires running over the road surface, also help improve the water quality in the ocean. In the afternoon, Dr. Edward Huang 黄铁屿, CIEDM Principal, will host a ZWTV crew to film the garden for a special edition on Earth Day. In addition, on April 4 we signed a NRDC letter to Los Angeles County Regional Water Quality Control Board that tells officials to keep toxic runoff pollution out of our beach waters, and a petition prepared by the Center for Biological Diversity to President Obama and EPA for protecting our coastal ecosystems and communities from ocean acidification.

Students followed my suggestion to engage public outreach for participation & education purposes and set up an Adopt-A-Tree program for taking care of the new trees by students.

  • Feed back on the World Wetlands Day Workshop

    Hey Dr. Huang!

Here are the pictures! There's another one coming because they're pretty large. If you need anything else, let me know.

I'd also like to say, thank you so much for giving us this opportunity! My friends (and their parents) absolutely LOVED it, they're really excited about bringing more people into this movement and seeing how cool being green can be.

  • CIEDM-ISERI Party on Changing the Way We Eat - Eating Smart

    Event Anouncement

    Objectives
Today, 16 January 2012, is a US natioanl holiday, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Services. It is also the day when the United Nations officially launchs the campaign of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. In addition, a number of groups are calling the nationwide days of action to campaign a consititutional amendment for limiting the corportion's spending on politics. In respond to the call for campaign, Dr. King's call for community services and the UN's call for world wide supports for sustainable energy consumption, ISERI & CIEDM will voluntarily host the subject community education event in 2012.
    Description
It is a home party to celebrate the Lunar Year of Dragon, a viewing party to watch a webcast titled Changing the Way We Eat. The webcast is a part of TEDxManhattan's national event, and ISERI with CIEDM is serving as an independent local event sponsor to raise community awareness of the need for sustainable food and farming that significantly affect the energy uses. It is also an organizing party to raize community awareness of a national day of actions to push back against the corporate takeover of our democracy, especially on food safety and nutrition information. 21 January 2012 is the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. FEC ruling, which allows unlimited corporate spending in elections. The food industry has used its political clout in Congress to slow progress on food safety or nutrition questions. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has, with dozens of other health, environmental, political reform and consumer organizations, has signed the United for The People campaign aiming at toppling the Supreme Court’s ruling that has watered down the federal nutrition standards for school foods. We support the campaign because there is too much industrial money in food politics, and the pary will be a part of national wide parties for the campaign.
    Actions Taken
    - Signed CSPI letter to President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama today to encourage the Administration to finalize and release food marketing guidelines.
    - Signed to support EWG's Just Label It campaign today and signed the Center for Food Safety's petition to the FDA demanding that genetically engineered foods are labeled.
    - Signed the Change.org's letter to tell the FDA: Set arsenic limits in fruit juice to protect kids
    - Singed on January 18 with NRDC and Rainforest Action Network letters to thank President Obama for rejecting the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline
    - Signed up on January 18 with 350.org to support its action in DC on January 24 for blowing the whistle on Big Oil corruption in Congress.

Saturday 21 Januray 2012, the day before Chinese New Year Eve.
    Venue
Arcadia EcoHome, Arcadia, California. It is a certified green building with a Victory Garden, a member of the Victory Garden Foundation, an organic orchard & vegetable garden.
